How to Make a PNG Background Transparent

A PNG can store partially transparent pixels using an alpha channel. A checkerboard in an editor is a visual cue for transparency; the pattern itself is not part of the image.

Create the transparent area

Upload the source image to a background removal tool and let it separate the subject. Download the result as PNG so the transparent pixels are preserved. JPEG does not store alpha transparency.

Check that transparency is real

Open the file in an image editor or place it over a colored layer in a design tool. If you see a solid white rectangle in every viewer, the file may have been flattened. Some file browsers show transparency against white, so appearance alone can be misleading.

Use the cutout where it fits

Transparent PNGs work well in slides, product layouts, and graphics where the background may change. Review edges and dimensions before publishing; transparency does not repair blur, compression, or missing detail.
